'Celebrating Art and Connection Since 1929'

Are you not entertained?

The Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is where it all started…Thursday, May 16, 1929. No red carpet. 270 guests. No live broadcast. 15 minutes. It’s hard to imagine the Academy Awards humble beginnings and its survival in the wake of the biggest global recession only five months later. It’s purpose; to support and unite.

Moving forward a couple of years, it’s interesting to note how the arts held the world together during the Great Depression. The US Federal Government employed creatives through the FERA (later becoming the WPA) emergency program for public relief, connection and hope - an unprecedented act for the people.

Moving forward again 85 odd years and we find ourselves again seeking connection through music, creativity and storytelling. It’s hard to deny a world without art. Countries like Italy have turned to music amidst their greatest adversity since the Second World War. The puzzle, Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison foreshadows as essential for his children during this #stayhome order filters under art and entertainment with its origins being found in painting. And the luxury of streaming platforms like Netflix, Stan and Amazon Prime has dramatically escalated as we face a new normal. Arts play a crucial role in society so its difficult to watch our industry fall through the recent cracks.

If you are looking for an appreciation challenge over the next few months whilst you #stayhome, treat yourself to the complete list of ‘Best Picture’ Oscar winning films since the very first Academy Awards. The first Academy Awards honoured films from 1927 and 1928.
